What Credentials And Documents Are Required For TSA PreCheck?

If you are about to go into your TSA PreCheck application process then you might be wondering which documents you’ll need to get through the process. It’s not as simple as just a list though, as requirements will differ depending on a few factors.

Required Documents and Information

When you apply for TSA PreCheck, you will need to provide some personal information and documents. United States citizens who were born in the United States will have the simplest process.

The information includes:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Current address
  • Social Security number
  • All names and aliases used (current and past)
  • Current address
  • Email OR phone number
  • Preferred language (English or Spanish)

Typical documents will include:

  • Proof of US citizenship or legal permanent residency status
    • Passport
    • Birth certificate
    • Green card
    • Birth Certificate bearing an official seal (or certified copy) issued by a State, county, municipal authority (or outlying possession of the U.S.)
    • Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)
    • Enhanced ID (EID)
    • Enhanced Tribal Card (ETC)
    • Free and Secure Trade (FAST) Card
    • Global Entry Card
    • NEXUS Card
    • Passport Book or Card
    • Passport Book or Card (expired within 12 months)
    • Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) Card
  • Photo ID
    • Commercial Driver’s License issued by a State or outlying possession of the U.S.
    • Driver’s License issued by a State or outlying possession of the U.S.
    • Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)
    • Enhanced ID (EID)
    • Enhanced Tribal Card (ETC)
    • Federal ID Card with a seal or logo from a Federal agency
    • Free and Secure Trade (FAST) Card
    • Global Entry Card
    • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
    • Military Dependent’s Card
    • Military ID Card
    • Military ID Card (retired)
    • NEXUS Card
    • Native American Tribal Document
    • Passport Book or Card
    • Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) Card
    • State ID Card (or outlying possession of the U.S.) with a seal or logo from State or State Agency
    • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card from DHS/TSA

If your photo ID has proof of your US citizenship or immigration status than the other document may not be necessary. For example an Enhanced Driver’s License will not require further proof of citizenship where as commercial driver’s license will.

Matching Requirements

The TSA states that the name on your PreCheck application must exactly match the name on the identification and proof of citizenship/immigration documents.

The gender on any application documents will not have to match that of your PreCheck application. The application will accept Male, Female, or “Other Gender”. The TSA does not check for or match gender between the application and documentation, but your name and date of birth must always be an exact match across all documents and credentials.

In Closing

If you’re planning on applying for TSA PreCheck, there are a few things you need to know and a few things you’ll need to bring, but for the vast majority of US citizens it will be a quick, painless process that you’ll wish you did years before.
